As Memorial Day approaches, we pause to remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.
For some, Memorial Day is not symbolic. It is personal.
There are names, faces, voices, and moments that never leave you. Army Col. Stephen K. Scott was one of those heroes – a leader remembered for always putting his soldiers first and for volunteering to return to Iraq because he believed it was his duty to stand beside his troops.
Some people spend a lifetime wondering why they were spared. Sometimes, the weight of sacrifice is carried quietly with the understanding that another service member took the hit meant for someone else.
“He took a missile that had my name on it.” Our founder is reminded daily.
As we honor the fallen this Memorial Day season, may we never forget that freedom is carried forward by those willing to sacrifice everything for the person beside them.
